IIRR
in Africa
|
|

Africa
remains an underdeveloped continent in spite of the enormous
potential in human and natural resources. It is estimated
that up to 50% of the region’s population lives in
absolute poverty. Indeed 26 of the 40 countries
characterized by the United Nations as least developed, are
in Africa. Some of the thematic areas that require quick
interventions by the people of Africa and their partners
include; food security, good governance, gender equity,
control of HIV/AIDS, agriculture and natural resources
management, and increased incomes for the poor.
IIRR
is working with some of Africa’s development partners,
governments and civil society to build capacity of the
people of Africa to improve their lives. Through training
programs both in Africa and in the Philippines, IIRR has
trained many of Africa’s development managers. In Kenya,
Ethiopia and Uganda, IIRR has established learning community
programs in the areas of gender equity, food security, micro
credit and reproductive health. Also, IIRR is working on
strengthening capacities of local non-governmental
organizations to enable them play a more effective role in
poverty eradication activities.

Responding
to emerging needs in Africa |
IIRR has
started a new regional course for development
organizations that provide capacity building support to
local non-governmental organizations and organized
community groups. The course, offered at the Regional
Center for Africa in Nairobi, is designed to share
IIRR’s long experience in participatory capacity
building for development practitioners, and to encourage
organizations to share own experiences. It is in response
to the increasing demand for capacity building from
non-governmental organizations and other civil society
actors.
