Public
Awareness: A manual for agricultural NGOs and research
institutions. 2002
This
manual, produced by IIRR’s Regional Center for Africa, is
targeted at influencing policy formulation and agricultural
strategy development. Commissioned by the Technical Center for
Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA), an organization
formed under the ACP-EU treaty, it focuses on leaders of
organizations and communication professionals.
With
this publication, CTA aims to enhance institutional links and
to promote access of rural development workers to research and
development experiences.
The
idea for the book was borne out of a series of workshops
conducted by CTA on public awareness. The workshops were
themselves a response to the increasing need for development
organizations to publicize their work and strengthen links with the constituencies they serve.
Managing
Dryland Resources. A Manual for Eastern and Southern Africa.
2002
This
Manual is intended for use as a field guide for development
workers of community based and non-governmental organizations,
churches, government agencies and research institutions
engaged in agricultural development. Further, it will serve as
reference material for schools, vocational institutions and
universities. It builds on the Sustainable Agricultural
Extension Manual, which was published by IIRR in 1998.
This
manual provides an overview of selected problems and issues in
dry land agriculture in Eastern and Southern Africa, and the
various attempts by individuals, communities and development
organizations to overcome these problems. It provides specific
examples of technologies and approaches, as well as selected
experiences of individual farmers, organizations and
communities.
Integrating Gender in
Development Projects. A manual for Field Practitioners. 2000
The aim of
this manual is to assist Ethiopian development workers who
wish to do gender-responsive project planning. The manual
suggests ideas, tools and techniques relevant to
gender-responsive project planning. It aims at providing
technical support for grassroots development workers who want
to integrate gender at project level. The manual is also
relevant to decision-makers and project designers involved in
development work and will serve as a guide for
gender-sensitive project planning as well as monitoring the
gender aspects of ongoing projects.
The Manual
is presented as follows: there are boxes with a number of
questions, and field staff and users of the manual are
encouraged to start with these questions before reading the
scientific concepts. There are also boxes that provide
information on the relevance of the tools or the gender issues
to be taken into consideration before applying the tools/
techniques. Each of the tools has general and specific
background reading. In addition, case studies undertaken at
field level and literature review and analysis are included.
These should encourage field staff to try out the gender
analysis tools suggested here and to apply them in specific
situations.
Sustainable Agriculture
Extension Manual. 2000
Sustainable
Agriculture covers a wide range of topics: soil and water
conservation, using organic matter to sustain soil fertility,
pest management, cropping systems, livestock management, and
many others. For agriculture to be sustainable, it must take
into account not only the physical environment (soils,
climate, ecosystems), but also local social and economic
conditions. Efforts to promote sustainable farming often use
community-based research and extension approaches.
This manual
covers all these aspects of sustainable agriculture: the
physical, socio-economic and organizational dimensions.
Drawing on the experiences of numerous development and
research agencies throughout Eastern and Southern Africa, the
manual includes sections on technology development and
extension, credit and marketing, land use, gender, soil and
water conservation, soil fertility, cropping systems,
livestock extension, and livestock technologies. Appendices
list resource organizations, references and training materials
where readers can find further information.
Written in
clear, easy-to- understand language, the manual is illustrated
with numerous line drawings. The manual will be indispensable
for extension agents, non-government organizations, field
technicians and all involved in designing and promoting
sustainable agriculture in Eastern and Southern Africa.
This
publication is also available in Swahili as a manual and a set
of six audiotapes.
Ethnoveterinary Medicine
in Asia: An Information Kit on Traditional Animal Health Care
Practices. 1994
Second
printing: October 1998
The four
booklets in this kit contain details on herbal remedies and
other ethnoveterinary practices used by stock raisers and
healers in South and Southeast Asia. Three of the four
booklets cover ruminants (cattle, buffaloes, sheep and goats),
swine and poultry. The fourth booklet contains topics which
apply to any of these species. This kit contains many valuable
traditional practices that serve as low-cost and practical
alternatives for rural communities. It is a useful reference
for livestock raisers, animal health care practitioners and
researchers throughout tropical Asia and other developing
countries.
The
publication was produced with the Heifer Project
International. Funding partners were Bread for the World in
Germany, Heifer Project International, World Bank, German
Appropriate Technology Exchange and the Research Institute for
Veterinary Science.
