IIRR in Africa

Programme goal

IIRR Africa’s goal is to enable people and their organizations to achieve positive and sustained impact on poverty reduction in Africa.

Objective

IIRR-Africa’s objective is to build the capacity of individuals, communities, and their organizations to demonstrate and contribute towards sustained impact on poverty reduction through various capacity building and learning interventions.

Program Strategy

The international Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) Africa has chosen to address poverty in the region through the Capacity Building approach. IIRR- Africa believes that capacity building that includes systematic learning, documenting and sharing information and knowledge for scaling up and replication, can contribute to poverty reduction.

To achieve its goal, IIRR-Africa capacity building programme operates on three sub-programmes.

Learning Community Centres

The Learning Community Centres (LCCs) are developed in the countries where IIRR-Africa operates, so as to:

  • Learn what needs to be done and implemented to effectively have an impact on poverty reduction. In this context IIRR works and learns together with organizations and community members affected by poverty and ensures that they participate fully in the entire process so that efforts can be sustained.
  • Actively monitors, evaluates, learns, documents and shares lessons learned with communities and partner organizations through action research, case studies, publications, study tours, trainings, workshops and conferences.

The Strategic Community Capacity Builders

IIRR-Africa strengthens the abilities of other Strategic Community Capacity Builders in the region by:

  • Introducing various capacity building and organizational development interventions, tools, approaches and systems.
  • Sharing lessons leaned in the LCCs through trainings and study missions.
  • Replicating successful community and organizational development experiences of LCCs.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the effects/impacts of these efforts on poverty reduction at the community level with regards to the organization’s programs/projects.

Strategic Community Capacity Builders

This aims at providing “demand- led” capacity building support services to a wider client base and other strategic partners to contribute to their development process as well as to generate resources to ensure the financial sustainability of IIRR. The institute organizes:

  • Tailor-made and customized training and technical services specific to individual organizations;
  • National and regional trainings and workshops based on commonly identified needs and demands;
  • Study tours and learning missions to LCCs and communities of our strategic capacity building partners for learning, adaptation, replication and scaling up;
  • Documentation and publication of cross cutting and thematic subjects as well as innovative practices of development communities and practitioners for knowledge sharing and generating of income through sale of publications.

Responding to emerging needs in Africa

IIRR has started a new regional course for development organizations that provide capacity building support to local non-governmental organizations and organized community groups. The course, offered at the Regional Center for Africa in Nairobi, is designed to share IIRR’s long experience in participatory capacity building for development practitioners, and to encourage organizations to share own experiences. It is in response to the increasing demand for capacity building from non-governmental organizations and other civil society actors.
