Mainstreaming Gender in Development Organizations:
Documenting Innovations from Asia and the
Pacific Region
“How
do you design strategies, programs
and interventions to redress gender
inequality?” This is a key question
many development organizations have
grappled with in seeking to make development
and humanitarian assistance programs
and projects equitable and efficient.
A total of 18 innovative field experiences
of successful gender mainstreaming
in Asia and the Pacific were reviewed
at a writeshop organized by IIRR and
InterAction’s Commission on
the Advancement of Women (CAW) in
July 2004 at IIRR’s Yen Center
in the Philippines. Compiled into
a publication, the groundbreaking
cases demonstrate bold steps to bring
gender equity principles in mainstream
development sectors including national
infrastructure, irrigation, forestry
and natural resources, media and the
arts, internet technology and connectivity,
enterprise development, scientific
research, and in the policy and processes
of development institutions themselves.
The field experiences present practical
strategies in community efforts at
transforming the lives of women and
men, boys and girls with the twin
goals of improving their quality of
life and promoting equitable social
relations.
