CMDRR training of trainers in Cagayan de Oro ended with high hopes

The Training of Trainers on Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR) among partner communities and organizations of the Lutheran World Relief in Mindanao ended with high motivation.

The 5 day CMDRR TOT was organized from August 16-20 in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines with 18 participants coming from 8 organizations joined the said training.  These are the AGB Foundation Inc, Kapwa Upliftment Foundation Inc., Josefa Segovia Foundation, Inc, Balay Dabaw Sur, Inc., Center for Empowerment and Resource Development-Marihatag, Mahintana Foundation, Inc., BMFI and Mary Mediatrix of all Grace Foundation, Inc. Two of the participants represented the local government units particularly the Municipal Planning and Development Office and Municipal Disaster Coordinating Center.
The training was designed to enhance the capacity of the participants to facilitate the CMDRR process which includes participatory disaster risk assessment (hazard, vulnerability and capacity assessment) and participatory planning and contingency planning.

A one and a half day Field Practicum was held in Barangays Sibantang and Mahayag of the Municipality of Talisayan, Misamis Oriental, wherein the participants conducted and facilitated the actual conduct of disaster risk assessment and analysis as well as facilitated the DRR/contingency action planning..

On the last day of the training, the participants valued the importance of “community managed” versus “community based” disaster risk reduction. In their re-entry plans, all of the participants signified to embrace CMDRR and to conduct participatory disaster risk assessments and analysis, as well as facilitate DRR/contingency plans with their partner communities. The participants also recognized the importance of linking policy and advocacy to CMDRR.
