Diverse Backgrounds, Unanimous Feedback

(SILANG, Cavite, Philippines - June 8, 2010) - Eleven development professionals from different organizations and nations traveled to the Philippines to attend IIRR’s International Course on Participatory Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning held May 11–22, 2010 at the Y.C. James Yen Center in Silang. The course challenged participants to go beyond measurement and judgment in monitoring and evaluation to focus on learning and empowerment. The course guided participants on how to ensure greater stakeholder participation in monitoring and evaluation as this helps improve the understanding of the development process, ensure project sustainability and gain better project results. Part of the course requirements involved a field exposure visit to a community organization to conduct a participatory monitoring and evaluation with the community organization. Two Cavite-based cooperatives were visited to conduct this two-day experiential activity. Doing analysis and evaluation with the members of the cooperative reinforced participant understanding of the concepts Participatory Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning promotes.

At the end of the training, the participants reflected on their own M&E practices at their workplaces and organizations. Armed with new insight, a majority of them decided to take a bold step and direct their organization’s monitoring and evaluation process towards learning and empowerment.
