IIRR Trustee Appointed to Darfur by President Obama

Dane Smith was an IIRR Trustee (until this appointment) and he was Deputy Chief of Mission in Sudan 1986-89 and in Botswana 1984-86. He directed the African Economic Policy Staff 1989-90 and was Chief, Food Policy Division, in the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs, 1979-81. He was appointed by President Clinton, while concurrently directing the State Department’s Office of West African Affairs as Special Presidential Envoy for Liberia 1995-1996.  He was Ambassador to Guinea 1990-1993 and President of National Peace Corps Association from 1999-2003. In his new post as Senior US Diplomat to Darfur, he will be working alongside Ambassador Princeton Lyman (north-south negotiations), Ambassador Barrie Walkley (Juba consulate), and Ambassador Johnnie Carson (Assistant Secretary for African Affairs).
