The world’s largest archipelagic state, Indonesia is considered the third-largest democracy in the world and home to the world’s largest Muslim population. A rather young democracy, Indonesia held its first free parliamentary election in 1999. However, even with a per capita GDP of $3,843 and a literacy rate of 90.4 percent, the World Bank estimates that over 60 percent of the country’s 240 million people live on less than $2 a day. Indonesia ranks 107 out of 177 countries on the Human Development Index.
The earthquake and tsunami in Aceh and Northern Sumatra that hit in December 2004 devastated the country. While resources for relief and rescue efforts were plentiful immediately following the disaster, there still remains a need for the government and communities alike to develop the tools to mitigate the risk of disaster in the future. IIRR is training locally-based NGOs and community-based organizations in the practical principles of community-managed disaster risk reduction.
