Mainstreaming HIV/AIDS is a process that enables development actors to address the causes and effects of AIDS in an effective and sustained manner, both through their usual work and within their workplace.1
If HIV/AIDS is to be eliminated, workplaces must provide an environment where employees are equipped to recognize and manage the disease. IIRR works with 20 Ethiopian NGOs in developing and implementing HIV/AIDS workplace policies and in mainstreaming them throughout their organizations. The goals are to create an awareness of HIV/AIDS in the workplace and to reduce vulnerability of employees and their families. Outputs of the project include a workplace program that focuses on in-house prevention and health maintenance of personnel. The project is also contributing to national efforts of the government of Ethiopia in combating and mitigating the impact of HIV/AIDS. IIRR plans to expand its network from working with 20 NGOs currently to working with 50 NGOs in Ethiopia, and plans are underway to integrate disaster risk reduction modules into HIV/AIDS mainstreaming programs.
