IIRR President Receives Honorary Doctorate

In recognition of her 'deep and genuine concern for the poorest of the poor', Dr. Pratima Kale, IIRR President, was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Civil Law by the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, USA last October. In the citation, Joel Cunningham, Vice Chancellor and President of the University hailed Dr. Kale for her pragmatic vision and life-long commitment to humanitarian initiatives and international development. "Her work for more than a dozen countries spread over three continents has made a difference in the lives of local communities in terms of children's and women's education, health, and access to support services," he added.

Speaking during a panel discussion on issues of biodiversity organized by the University, Dr. Kale emphasized the importance of understanding the needs and perspectives of local communities while implementing biodiversity initiatives. "We need to think about and consult with the people whose lives and livelihoods get affected by issues of natural resource management and biodiversity before planning project interventions," she said.
